This Dating Life: The Unbelievable Benefits Of Being In A Relationship As Told By A Single Twentysomething

There comes a point in our twenties, somewhere after 25 when we finally decide that it’s okay to settle down. As time goes on, more and more of our friends start coupling up. Then all of a sudden being single just doesn’t make sense. As we start going to more and more weddings and getting all the baby announcements from our friends, we start to want these same things in our lives. But having a family starts with finding someone to share a life with. As a result, it only makes sense that there are many perks that come with being in a relationship. From having someone to instantly text any great news you receive to having a best friend for life, being one-half of a couple has myriad of benefits. Here are just a few of the incredible benefits that come when you finally find someone to share your life with.

Someone who will listen to you.

How often do we have good news or terrible news to share with someone? More often than not, it’s in these instances that we call our moms to share the good or bad news when we are single. However, when we have a companion we can instantly text or call them as well. Being in a relationship is like having a best friend who you also get to make-out with. In fact, when something happens and you feel the urgent desire to tell someone you can instantaneously get a reaction from your S.O. Being part of a couple allows you to be as annoying as you truly are without worrying that the other person is going to leave you for simply wanting to share a funny meme.

All the compliments.

We all have days when we feel a little blah. Having a companion who loves you no matter what is a huge perk of being in a relationship. In fact, finding a partner who is unafraid to disperse compliments is someone all the single girls are looking for. In the end, finding someone who loves you for your flaws and imperfections is the goal when single girls are out in the dating world.

You are happier.

Typically, your partner has seen you at your worst. Remember that night you got way too drunk with your girlfriends and spent the night in the bathroom. Or that time you got food poisoning and he held your hair back? A wonderful partner will continue to stay no matter how gross you think you look. In fact, having someone take care of you allows you to feel better about life in general. You no longer need to be so stubborn and try to do everything on your own. You get to let someone else into your life who can provide you with ice cream when you are PMSing. In fact, asking for help when you need it is critical to having a healthy relationship.

A personal handyman.

As a single girl, there are a few life things that are simply difficult to accomplish without a partner. For instance, most single girls have no idea how to change a tire or use a drill (at least I sure don’t). As a result, having a man who can be at your beck and call when something needs to be fixed in your apartment is a wonderful thing. Being in a relationship allows you to call on your boo when you get stuck on the side of the road with a flat tire.

Being weird together.

As someone who considers herself a weirdo, it’s important for me to find someone who is also a little weird. Dr. Suess said it best “We are all a little weird and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love.” Having someone that you can be completely and unabashedly yourself with is a huge perk to being in a relationship.

You have someone to share your interests with.

Most of all, being in a solid relationship provides you with opportunities to explore. You begin to gain experiences that you may have missed out on while you were single. If there is a movie you’ve been dying to see but feel weird going alone, now you can drag your S.O. with you. In fact, having someone to drag around to farmer’s markets and brunch is a huge perk to being in a relationship. Furthermore, you get to experience things that your S.O. is into that you otherwise would never have thought to experience. He may love basketball or sci-fi. You get this incredible opportunity to learn more about his interests and that allows you to grow into a cultured and well-rounded human being.
